The instructions in this article refer to Migration Assistant, but they also apply to the Setup Assistant.

Setup Assistant will ensure all your MacBook Pro's information is transferred to the new Mac, including Adobe Photoshop, MS Office, your iTunes and iPhoto Libraries, your user account name and password, all your iTunes and App Store purchases, even the pictures you see on your login screen.


If at all possible, use a wired connection between the two Macs. An Ethernet cable connecting the new iMac to your MacBook Pro will work fine. Transferring information over a wireless network can be very time-consuming. It would not be unusual for a wireless migration to take an entire day, whereas using a wired connection might take only an hour or two.
